Professor Simon Kingham, of the University of Canterbury, discusses why he describes himself as an environment epidemiologist1.

    Transcript

    PROFESSOR SIMON KINGHAM
Epidemiology2 is the study of the health of populations3. Medical people often look at individuals – they refer to the health of an individual. Epidemiology is the study of populations, so sometimes I refer to myself as an environment epidemiologist. It’s a bit of a mouthful, but it means someone who studies the health of populations in relation to the environment that they spend time in.

    1. epidemiologist: A person who studies epidemiology.
    2. epidemiology: The branch of medical science that deals with the study (including type, origin and geographical spread) and control of diseases in a population – literally, the study of epidemics.
    3. population: In biology, a population is a group of organisms of a species that live in the same place at a same time and that can interbreed.
