This kākā juvenile is clinging to the base of tree. It is only within a day or so of fledging. Juveniles cannot initially fly, so they are very vulnerable to predation for the first few weeks after fledging. It is fortunate that this was in an area of active predator management as this tree is only a metre or so from a track in a Wellington public reserve. Predators in urban areas include cats and dogs.
