Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing of the Vitruvian Man (c. 1492) shows his interest in proportion. He believed the workings of the human body to be an analogy1 for the workings of the universe2.

    1. analogy: A comparison between two things, usually using something that is easy to understand to explain something that is more complicated.
    2. universe: All matter and energy, including the Earth, the galaxies and the contents of intergalactic space, regarded as a whole.
