Associate Professor Cather Simpson

Associate Professor Cather Simpson is lighting up New Zealand’s economy with lasers. Cather is working out more efficient ways to sort sperm for the dairy industry.

Speaker: Cather Simpson

Cather Simpson is CEO of Orbis Diagnostics, Professor of Physics and Chemical Sciences at The University of Auckland, and Partner at Pacific Channel. She sits on the boards of Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, SPIE the International Society for Optics and Photonics, and several startup companies. A Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi, Cather also serves on the Academy Executive. At the University of Auckland, she founded the Photon Factory, a high-tech, industry-facing laser centre. Her work there has resulted (thus far) in three deep-tech spinouts: Engender Technologies (acquired by CRV, Ltd.), Orbis Diagnostics and Luminoma Diagnostics, Ltd.

In her spare time, she likes doing 5000 piece puzzles while listening to classic fiction or history documentaries. Cather says she’s very decisive, but changes her mind a lot.
