Dr Matt Rayner is Senior Researcher Natural Sciences at Auckland Museum and has spent a lifetime cruising on and researching the wildlife of Tikapa Moana, the Hauraki Gulf. In his talk, Matt will talk about his collections and field-based research on the seabird populations of the Gulf and the immediate need for conservation actions to prevent the collapse of marine food webs that are precious to so many Aucklanders.
About Dr Matt Rayner
Matt is an avian biologist and conservation ecologist who currently holds the position of Senior Researcher Natural Sciences at Auckland Museum. His research focusses on studying the effects of ecosystem changes on New Zealand bird communities, understanding the biology of poorly known endangered species and researching the phylogeography and taxonomy of tube nosed seabirds. Increasingly, Matt is using his research to advocate for marine protection in the Hauraki Gulf as a means of achieving holistic land sea protection of this declining ecosystem.
