Join Dr Andrea Alfaro, a Professor of Marine Ecology and Aquaculture, as she explores sustainable aquaculture cultivation with her expertise and background in green-lipped mussels, Perna canaliculus, other bivalves. Andrea will discuss what sustainable aquaculture practices can look like, and what the future holds for this industry and she unpacks what farming the seas for a sustainable future may look like. Andrea, a leading international expert in aquaculture and marine ecology, will share her knowledge spanning the biology and ecology of these species and communities, feed development, to water and waste management here in Aotearoa New Zealand.

About the speaker

Professor Andrea Alfaro, from the Auckland University of Technology/Te Wānanga Aronui o Tāmaki Makaurau, has experience working closely with New Zealand’s aquaculture industry, investigating sustainable methods of mussel cultivation and the complex interactions between the organism and its natural environment. Her research also focuses on reproduction, larval rearing, growth enhancement, and the health and nutrition of a variety of commercial shellfish, such as mussels, pāua, scallops, oysters and geoducks.
