Teaching and Learning Approaches

Student activities are the main feature of this collection, along with a variety of resources for teachers to use in exploring Ferns.

  • Fern propagation – Student Activity

In this activity, students learn how to propagate ferns. All species of ferns reproduce by means of spores. Some ferns, like the hen and chickens fern, reproduce asexually by means of bulbils.

  • Traditional fern collections – Student Activity

In this activity, students collect, press, mount and label ferns to develop a traditional herbarium.

  • Alternative fern collections – Student Activity

In this activity, students use a variety of non-traditional methods to create a fern collection for display.

  • DIY fern classification – Student Activity

In this activity, students use fern specimens or image cards to group species of ferns according to their physical structures (rhizomes, fronds and sporangia).

  • Using ferns to survive – Student Activity

In this activity, students plan a storyboard along the lines of television shows such as Man vs Wild and Survivor to illustrate how humans can use ferns to survive in the bush.
