Teaching and Learning Approaches

Student activities are the main feature of this collection, along with a variety of resources for teachers to use in exploring Digestion Chemistry.

  • Enzyme action – Student Activity

    In this activity, students investigate the effect that fruit purees (pineapple, kiwifruit, peach) have on the setting of party jellies.

  • Calculating RMR and daily energy output – Student Activity

    In this activity, students calculate their RMR (resting metabolic rate) and use this to calculate the energy cost of various activities. From these values, an estimate of their average daily energy expenditure can be made.

  • Futures thinking about obesity – Student Activity

    In this activity, students use the Futures thinking tool to investigate obesity and the impact it has on the health system.

  • Salivary amylase and starch – Student Activity

    In this activity, students investigate the action of salivary amylase on starch present in cooked rice. Simple tests for starch and its digestion product, maltose, are applied.

  • Lactose intolerance – Student Activity

    In this activity, students investigate the effect of the digestive enzyme lactase on a sugar found in milk called lactose. The digestive system condition known as lactose intolerance will also be looked at.

  • Fermentation – Student Activity

    In this activity, students set up an alcoholic fermentation, prepare and view a slide of bacteria responsible for monolactate fermentation and answer questions about a video clip on gut bacteria fermentation.
